SA: SA to extend freeze on poker machine numbers
South Australia's Premier JOHN OLSEN says the state will extend its freeze on poker
machine numbers amid the toughest gambling reforms in the nation.
Under the proposed reforms, autoplay buttons which allow patrons to play more than
one machine at a time would be banned, as would machines which accept notes.
The availability of cash at gaming venues would be restricted to $200 a day for individuals
under the proposal, to be presented to state parliament this week.
Mr OLSEN says the government would also create a portfolio of gambling minister and
create an Independent Gambling Authority to regulate all gambling in the state.
He says the reforms would help minimise harm created by problem gambling.
The freeze on poker machine numbers in the state, introduced six months ago, will be
extended a further two years.
Mr OLSEN says a rollback to reduce the number of gaming machines in the state had not
been ruled out.
