Egan calls on Brogden to clarify comments on 4,000 extra police
New South Wales Treasurer MICHAEL EGAN says the state Opposition must explain an apparentcoalition pledge to boost police numbers by 4,000.
Opposition treasury spokesman GEORGE SOURIS has told the ABC that police numbers areabout 4,000 short of what's needed.
He went on to say that with those extra police the coalition would be able to reinstatethe strengths that have been taken away from the police service.
Mr EGAN says Mr SOURIS' comments contained no ifs or buts and must be clarified byOpposition Leader JOHN BROGDEN.
He says anyone who heard the interview would be left with the impression that a coalitiongovernment plans to engage 4,000 extra police.
But Mr EGAN says such a pledge is recklessly unaffordable, with recurrent costs of$840 million over the four years of the next parliament.
Mr EGAN says Mr SOURIS must clarify the opposition's position immediately.
